History

  • 1948 – By the Decree of the President of then Federal Peoples’ Republic of Yugoslavia and Minister of National Defence, Marshal of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito, BRODARSKI NAUČNI INSTITUT (Ship Scientific Institute) was founded in Zagreb.
  • 1956 – Under the authority of Directorate for Naval-technical Research in Split, the following institutions were active: Brodarski Naučni Institute in Zagreb, Institute for Naval Weapons and Electronics in Zagreb and Department for Studying and  Building of Ships.
  • 1959 – Directorate of Naval-technical Institutes was established in Zagreb, as an umbrella organization for: Institute for Ship Hydrodynamics, Institute for Naval Weapons and Equipment and Shipbuilding Institute (all of which in Zagreb).
  • 1967 – All of the activities from the field of science, research, design and construction of naval and special vessels and appropriate systems, intended primarily for the needs of the navy, meaning all the three institutes from Zagreb as well as some smaller organizational units from Belgrade and Split, were merged into a unique institution – Brodarski Institute, Zagreb. 

Under the name of Brodarski Institute, the institution has been active in the following fields:

  1. Design and monitoring of construction and exploitation of naval vessels: patrol craft, corvettes, frigates, torpedo and missile craft, landing craft and by auxilliary vessels, submersibles, navigation systems, weapons, mine and counter-mine as well commando systems, and other items needed for defence tasks;
  2. Advancement of shipbuilding science and practice through close cooperation with institutions of higher education and organization of specialized studies in the areas of shipbuilding and other relevant or related scientific and professional disciplines;
  3. Cooperation with shipbuilding and suporting industrieson upgrading of ship as a complex product of overall economic system of a nation, intended for world market, where it is accepted and recognized;
  4. Cooperation with scientific and economic actors from non-shipbuilding areas such as construction, power industry, medicine, chemistry etc.
  • 1991 – With the beginning of the Croatian War of Independence and the gaining of independence of the Republic of Croatia, through planned and organized action of its employees led by a group of patriots, Brodarski Institute managed to preserve all its resources and gave them on disposal to the Croatian Government and got classified as being under the authority of the latter.

In newly created conditions of market orientation of overall Croatian economy, including its science and other development resources, by the decision of the Croatian Government as its owner, Brodarski Institute has started operating and developing as a limited liability company.
